Individual Therapy with male therapist Sean Neesley, LMFT in Santa Cruz

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy at my practice is a collaborative, depth-oriented process that helps you explore feelings, patterns, and life experiences with compassion and clarity. We work together to understand the underlying causes of distress—such as attachment wounds, relationship dynamics, trauma, anxiety, or depression—rather than only addressing surface symptoms. Sessions provide a safe, confidential space where you are truly seen and heard; my approach balances empathic attunement with clear, thoughtful interventions aimed at increasing self-awareness, emotional regulation, and meaningful change. Whether you seek short-term problem solving or longer-term personal growth, the work is paced to your needs and grounded in a humanistic, relational perspective.

In practice, therapy begins with an assessment to identify goals and areas of focus, and from there we set a collaborative plan that evolves as you do. Sessions typically involve exploring current struggles, examining relational patterns, processing emotions, and experimenting with new ways of relating to yourself and others. I blend reflective listening with targeted strategies—sometimes drawing on psychodynamic insight to uncover formative influences, sometimes using experiential techniques to access emotion, and sometimes offering practical tools to manage symptoms. Progress is measured by your increasing sense of clarity, agency, and improved relationships, and I remain responsive to feedback so the work stays relevant, respectful, and effective.

Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.
— Brené Brown
